This interview features Robert Thum, who is a director of Diploma Programme and also Unit 9 master at University of East London. UEL has very a very spacious studio and great workshops of wood, steel, casting etc. According to Robert, the school encourages students to work with hands and experiment with 1:1 scale model and materials. And he also talked about 'Unit' system, which is characteristic of London architectural schools. His Unit 9 has been exploring the relationship between 'politics and architecture', reflecting various social and political problems in current London. Robert urges young architects to think about 'social sustainability' and how architects can play an active role in sustaining our democratic society. Interviewer Kazuko Sakamoto is a coordinator of exhibition called Japanese Junction, featuring works by Japanese students who are studying in leading architectural schools all over the world. イースト・ロンドン大学の大学院課程のディレクターであるロバート・トゥム氏に、インタビューを行った。同校の教育方針、そしてロンドンの建築学校に共通するユニット制のデザインスタジオについて、トゥム氏のUnit9のテーマや今年の活動内容、建築教育の将来についてなど、多岐にわたりお話いただいた。UELでは、学生達は広いスタジオスペースのあちこちに並ぶ1:1の大きな実験的な模型や、木工や金属加工、鋳造など完備されたワークショップで、様々な材料を用いて新しい構法やデザインの試作をするなど、手や体をフルに使って創り学ぶという。その意味について、丁寧に語っていただいた。Unit9のイタリアでのフィールドトリップの話では、海外のサイトのリサーチをどのようにデザインスタジオに展開させていくかという点が興味深かった。トゥム氏とUnit9の学生達は、様々な社会的・政治的な問題を抱える一方で、オリンピックという一大イベントを迎える激動のロンドンの現況において、「ポリティクスと建築」の関わりについて探求している。建築教育の将来については、自然エネルギーや環境保全といった観点からのサステナビリティだけでなく、民主的な社会の持続についてどのように建築が関わっていけるかということに関心を持っていると語っていただいた。（坂本和子）
